Monsoon United Asian Women of Iowa is a community–based organization with a mission to end violence against women and girls in the Asian Pacific Islander (API) communities in Iowa. Monsoon officially opened its doors in 2007; since then, they have provided direct services to hundreds of survivors/victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and they run a violence prevention group focusing on youth in Iowa. Since 2008, Monsoon has included young people in a broader movement to end violence through its violence-prevention program. The program includes 11 youth advocates who work with middle and high school students on prevention efforts such as dating violence, bullying, stalking, sexting and gang violence. This is done through after-school programs, peer-to-peer counseling and youth-led community activities. Currently, the organization offers services for African communities.
As for volunteer opportunities, Monsoon United Asian Women of Iowa strongly prefers someone who is from Asia, has API language ability, or has long-term connections with API communities.
